Light Buzz is a series of six pieces for recordings I made of the electrical buzzings of path lights at the Boone Sculpture Garden, located at Pasadena City College in Pasadena, California. The sounds were manipulated using the HighC program by Thomas Baudel, which is based on the UPIC program by Iannis Xenakis. Each piece was built around one of five lights, with a drone at its core made from recordings of that light alone, and augmented by sounds derived from the other four lights. I used chance operations to determine a layer density hierarchy for each piece, layering the manipulated sounds from the remaining four lights in order from relatively dense to relatively sparse. Of course in the editing process much of that went out the window in favor of what sounded good, but such is the creative process. The last piece is a choir of three of the drones singing together, the remaining two sent to the hallway for talking too much.
