about

This project began as an idea for the practice of long tones on violin for improvement of tone production and consistency, and quickly mutated into an obsession with gathering recorded long tones (with some variation, intentional and un-) into the resulting pieces I have come to refer to as "string nebulae," sound masses which for me have the synesthetic visual quality of consistent rapid shift at the perimeter, moving inward toward a denser, slower-changing core.
There are twelve fourteen-minute long tone passages, one for each general area, low, middle and high, of each string of the violin, the two nebulae being comprised of six long tones each. The groupings were arrived at by chance operations (I drew numbers out of a hat); this also determined the order of tracks, which determined the order of panning.
All tracks were recorded outdoors between July 2023 and February 2024, at Pasadena City College and the "ghost warehouse" in Eaton Canyon where I like to go to practice. There is constant air traffic noise in the Los Angeles area, and during the recording of these tracks my sensitivity to it heightened perceptibly for obvious reasons. At first this caused me annoyance but I came to take a more philosophical attitude toward it, instead wondering at our usual collective inurement to the domination of our skies by military and commercial interests. Most of the airspace noise has been left in; I've edited it out only where it really interfered with the violin sound (cheating, I know). At first I was going to title the nebulae The Acceptance Quartets (originally intended as three groups of four) but ultimately decided simply on Airspace.
The solos were all recorded immediately after their corresponding long tone passages as sort of an attempt at going tabula rasa preceding improvisation. They appear at the end of each nebula in the same order that the long tone tracks were chosen.
